It looks like I have not posted about the Laptops I own since 2009 when I owned the VGN-FZ180E.
back in October 2011, I picked up a Customized VPCCA190X Series Laptop from Sony Outlet Store. It has an Intel® Coreā¢ i5-2410M processor (2.30GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.90GHz, AMD Radeonā¢ HD 6630M (1GB VRAM) hybrid graphics with Intel® Wireless Display technology, 14″ LED backlit display (1600 x 900), 320GB (5400rpm) hard drive, 4GB (2GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333, LED Backlit Keyboard. It was a great deal at $559.96. I promptly replaced the hard drive with Western Digital Scorpio Black 750GB (WD7500BPKT) 7200rpm SATA2 16MB Notebook Hard Drive and increased the memory to 8GB.
This VPCCA190X is one of the best laptops I’ve own. Perfect size, great performance and good looks. Well, I was ready to make it better and faster this year. In March 2013 I got a great deal on a Samsung 830 Series 256GB Internal Solid State Drive – 2.5″ Form Factor, SATA III 6Gb/s (MZ-7PC256Z) from TigerDirect: $169.99 – $20 rebate = $149.99. Note that this is the 830 series not the 840. Then I purchased this Hard Drive Caddy from Amazon.com.

I had all the hardware I needed but there was one big problem: I needed to use the SSD as the boot drive and had to transfer the operating system to it from a 750GB Hard Drive. The Hard Disk Clone programs I’ve had used did not provide a way to clone a bigger drive (750GB) to a smaller SSD (256GB). After a quick internet search I found the very program that claims to do that: Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Suite.
The Paragon Hard Disk Manager allows you select the folders to be included in the cloning process. Selecting Windows Operating System folder, Users folder and the Program Files folder produced a clone in the size of about 135GB which I promptly cloned to the SSD. Next, I replaced the Hard Drive with the SSD, pulled out the CD and replaced with the HDD Caddy from Amazon.com with 750GB Western Digital Scorpio in it.
Everything worked as planned. I had to make a few changes on some programs to make sure they are linked correctly to the stuff on the Hard Drive which was showing as the new E: Drive. SSD makes a huge difference in boot and program launch speeds. I have the best of beth worlds: A super fast SSD and a large storage readily available. The only thing I am missing is a CD/DVD reader/writer. My laptop may not have it but I am not missing it. I have not had a need to use a CD/DVD rerder/writer since I have taken it out six months ago.
Before I forget: my Windows Experience Index for Primary Disk went up to 7.9 after the SSD upgrade.
You would have thought that I was totally satisfied with my upgraded cutom Sony Vaio. That’s what I was thinking until I came across another great deal at the Sony Outlet Store: A Customized SVE14A290X Series Laptop with 3rd gen Intel® Coreā¢ i7-3632QM quad-core processor (2.20GHz / 3.20GHz with Turbo Boost), AMD Radeonā¢ HD 7670M (2GB) hybrid graphics, 14″ LED backlit display (1600 x 900), 750GB (7200rpm) hard drive, 8GB (8GB x1) DDR3-1600MHz memory and Windows 8 64-bit. Guess how much I paid for it? $470.96. It does not have an SSD and the 750GB Hard Drive is a Hitachi Hard Drive not the Western Digital but it was a deal I could not refuse.
I have not made any upgrades to the new laptop yet. I have not completely switched using it either. It took a while to get used to Windows 8. I briefly considered downgrading to Windows 7 and swap the SSD in the process. (Yes, it is possible to do that as long as you download the Windows 7 drivers from Sony Support linked above.) I decided against it. Once you figure out how to quickly go to the desktop, Windows 8 looks and behaves like Windows 7. Yes, you still have to deal with the quirks when reading PDF files or managing photos because of the focus on Apps but it is not a big deal.
This wraps up the latest news on my laptops.
